Regional NAM Youth Summit in Malaysia


On 24–25 February, the Regional NAM Youth Summit was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bringing together youth representatives from NAM Youth Organization’s National Chapters across Asia. The Summit provided a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas on climate action, youth engagement, and sustainable development.


The opening ceremony on 24 February featured remarks by Mohd. Izzat Afifi bin Hj. Abdul Hamid, NAMYO National Chapter Representative in Malaysia and President of the Malaysian Youth Council, followed by greetings from Ms. Leyla Hasanova, Chairperson of NAMYO and Presidency Youth Climate Champion for COP29. Participants also watched a video presentation highlighting NAMYO’s timeline and achievements. The Summit was officially declared open by H.E. Adam Adli, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia.


The first day continued with informational sessions about the Summit’s co-organizers and NAMYO’s mission, vision, and organizational structure, presented by Ms. Ayan Mukhtarli, Head of the NAMYO Secretariat. Distinguished speakers, including Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid, addressed climate change responses within the NAM framework. A panel discussion on “Climate Action Across Borders: The Intersection of Diplomacy and Corporate Responsibility” followed, engaging sustainability experts, NAMYO leadership, and regional National Chapters in dialogue about innovative approaches to climate action.


On the second day, NAMYO National Chapters engaged in strategic discussions with Secretariat representatives, exploring collaborative initiatives and preparations for the upcoming NAM Youth Baku Summit. The day concluded with a cultural tour of Kuala Lumpur, providing participants the opportunity to explore the city’s rich heritage, history, and vibrant local traditions.


The Regional NAM Youth Summit strengthened regional cooperation, fostered cross-cultural understanding, and empowered youth leaders to take an active role in advancing the Non-Aligned Movement’s principles and sustainable development goals.
